Little Akaloa was named for its “long harbor” in the local Māori dialect and is located on New Zealand’s Banks Peninsula. While Akaroa is known for its French settlement in 1840, Little Akaloa was an area for English settlers, particularly known for its timber milling and a well-regarded, more “proper” community compared to nearby Chorlton. A notable resident was John Henry Menses, after whom the area was also known as Menses Bay
