ORIGINAL LATE 1860s CARTE DE VISITE FORMAT ALBUMEN PRINT PHOTOGRAPH by SAMUEL CARNELL, NAPIER, NEW ZEALAND. A STUDIO PORTRAIT OF TWO MAORI MEN of the Hawke’s Bay region, identified in pencil on the accompanying section cut from the original album mount as IRAIA & KARAURIA PUPU.

These men were apparently related to Airini Donnelly, female leader and lawyer, whose father also bore the name Karauria Pupu. The photograph has the back mark of “S. CARNELL, NAPIER, N.Z.” THE PHOTO IS IN GOOD CONDITION (A LITTLE PALE); THE MOUNT FOXED. DIMENSIONS: Standard carte de visite size, 105 x 65 mm (APPROX. 4 x 2.5 INCHES)
