RARE 19th century CDV of identified Chiefs wife Ruiha [Wife of Wikepa]his name is tattoed? along the side of her upper arm.
She wear two Huia? feathers in her hair ,her moko has possibly been retouched to make it appear blacker than it actually was.

Some of the finest of these studies came from the studio of the Foy Bros in Thameas at one time new Zealands second largest city.However the photographers filtered their audiences experience of Maori culture through a liberal use of various maori props they kept on hand in the studio.Some of these appeared again and again in their Portraits ,employed no doubt for fear that their intended European audience might not find their sitters quite maori enough .
